It is believed that
learning disabilities are caused by a difficulty with the nervous
system that affects receiving, processing, or communicating
information. They may also run in families. Some children with
learning disabilities are also hyperactive; unable to sit still,
easily distracted, and have a short attention span.
Child and adolescent psychiatrists point out that learning
disabilities are treatable. If not detected and treated early,
however, they can have a tragic "snowballing" effect. For
instance, a child who does not learn addition in elementary school
cannot understand algebra in high school. The child, trying very
hard to learn, becomes more and more frustrated, and develops
emotional problems such as low self-esteem in the face of repeated
failure. learning disabled children misbehave in school because
they would rather be seen as "bad" than "stupid".
Parents should be aware of the most frequent signals of learning
disabilities, when a child:
-
Has difficulty
understanding and following instructions.
-
Has trouble
remembering what someone just told him or her.
-
Fails to master
reading, spelling, writing, and/or math skills, and thus fails
schoolwork.
-
Has difficulty
distinguishing right from left; difficulty identifying words or a
tendency to reverse letters, words, or numbers; (for example,
confusing 25 with 52, "b" with "d," or "on" with "no").
-
Lacks coordination
in walking, sports, or small activities such as holding a pencil
or tying a shoelace.
-
Easily loses or
misplaces homework, schoolbooks, or other items.
-
Cannot understand
the concept of time; is confused by "yesterday," "today,"
"tomorrow."
Such problems deserve a comprehensive evaluation by an expert who
can assess all of the different issues affecting the child. A
child and adolescent psychiatrist can help coordinate the
evaluation, and work with school professionals and others to have
the evaluation and educational testing done to clarify if a
learning disability exists. This includes talking with the child
and family, evaluating their situation, reviewing the educational
testing, and consulting with the school. It is important to
strengthen the child's self-confidence, so vital for healthy
development, and also help parents and other family members better
understand and cope with the realities of living with a child with
learning disabilities.

Homeopathy and Dyslexic or learning Disorders
Life has become
stressful and our nervous systems are becoming overwhelmed. Kids
don’t have the time and space to be kids. Expectations at school
and home are enormous. Each of us has our own unique way of
dealing with life’s ups and downs, coping and managing from day to
day.
People with learning disorders display their stress in different
ways depending on their unique make-up. With some children or
adults, we will see distraction, spaceyness, boredom. Others may
show compulsive tendencies, depression or aggression and lack of
self confidence. As you see the picture can be very diverse,
however the conventional approach labels each child or adult under
one diagnosis. The symptoms are somewhat controlled as long as
medication is continued. What happens when the underlying causes
are never dealt with as the child goes into adulthood? The anger
and/or depression have come about for a reason and will not
magically disappear unless they are addressed
Homeopathy is an effective alternative to stimulant medication.
Instead of suppressing the symptoms of restlessness, difficulty
focusing, lack of behavioral control, Homeopathy gets to the root
of the problem and works to heal the system into a state of
balance. Each child is unique and because Homeopathy is treating
the person rather than the disease, the individual is addressed
for his / her special qualities and symptoms. The underlying
causes of distress are many, including: anxiety, depression, fear,
genetics ,grief, low self- esteem and anger. Homeopathy takes
these things into consideration rather than labeling the children
under one general diagnosis.
Remember, it is your your child’s health that you are considering
and you need to be comfortable about the choices of treatment that
you take whether you choose a stimulant, Homeopathy or other
methods. Do not let anyone pressure you into a decision. Educate
yourself.
In homeopathy, we have seen many children who were labeled
dyslexic who went on to become excellent students- and even more
important happy healthy children as a result of homeopathy.
Here is one example.
Neeraj was a bright 10 year old boy. Despite being bright, he had
a lot of trouble doing his schoolwork.. His reading and writing
were very poor. He made many spelling mistakes. When writing he
reversed some letters. Neeraj also couldn't concentrate in school.
Finally psychologist diagnosed him as having dyslexia.
His parents heard from friends of theirs that we had had excellent
results in treating children with dyslexia, so they brought him to
see us.
In addition to the learning disabilities we noticed some other
symptoms. He didn't make eye contact and didn't interact very much
with adults. He also acted very spaced out -- unfocused. He was
easily irritated and aroused to anger, especially on waking in the
morning. Another problem was that he wet his bed, a few times a
week. This bothered him very much, and made him feel bad about
himself.
After examining his case we gave a homeopathic remedy. Two weeks
after the remedy he developed a high fever, headache and sore
throat for two days. After this aggravation he started improving.
By one month he was much calmer. He totally stopped wetting his
bed, which made him very happy. This boy was visiting from Delhi ,
We have had regular phone consultations .The boy was under my care
for seven months . Since more then one year , He has no problems.
He articulates now and answer promptly. The boy has improved in
looks and performs better in school. His parents , teachers and
friends are struck by the change in his personality.
